A world safe for cretins?

Although claimed as rescued by our coterie of self-serving Conservative MEPs who saw an opportunity to take credit for a small victory which justified their miserable (if expensive) existence, another small, craft business has been consigned to the dustbin of history - by the very same EU parliament which houses these dregs of humanity.

We are talking here about that minuscule trade which makes and repairs mercury barometers, the demise of which has been recorded by The Daily Telegraph today, which adds a trenchant if ultimately useless leader, despairing at this turn of events.

In the grander scheme of things, the demise of a small, obscure trade matters not a bit, except that they join the ranks of small farmers, fishermen, slaughterhouse owners and many others, driven out of business by an unthinking, unseeing and totally mindless bureaucracy. Given time, it will eventually destroy every iota of individual enterprise and variety which, collectively makes us different, all in the name of that vacuous political experiment, the European Union, aimed at preventing Germany going to war with France - or vice versa.

Yet, as our piece before this one gives witness, it was the free enterprise of the New World which returned our freedoms, not the stultifying, mind-numbing bureaucracy of the Old, which now seems to consider the abolition of individuality and freedom as its main aim in life.

One wonders if, when the troops stormed the beaches of Omaha, Utah, Gold, Juno and Sword, this day 63 years ago, they had been told they were making the world safe for cretins in Strasbourg to ban mercury barometers, they would have bothered.
